Affects and Views of his Rule
Some effects of Diocletian's leadership were:
- Diocletian made 100 provinces for one governor to rule. This made it impossible for any governor, or outlying province, to rebel against Diocletian.
- Diocletian’s reforms ultimately reduced the power of the Senate.
- Diocletian greatly increased the size and power of the military.
- Diocletian made a complex tax system which failed, making trade almost nonexistent.
The patricians of Rome disliked Diocletian the most. He reduced the Senate’s power greatly which greatly reduced the power of the patricians. Christians also highly disliked him because Diocletian persecuted the Christians for a long time. They were killed if they didn’t make a sacrifice to the Roman gods. The way the plebeians viewed him is unknown.
