Legacy
Diocletian was the first emperor to retire because he wanted to. After he resigned, his tetrarchic system of government failed. He was one of many emperors to die of natural causes. Without Diocletian, the empire fell into a time of civil wars. His expantion of the Empire is a important part of his rule. The most important part of Diocletian's rule, however, was his creation of the tetrarchy.
